What is Design again?

What is Design again? some of the the macro to the micro slides...When asked to communicate what I felt Design was to new First Year Visual Communication Design students I thought it might be worth trying to look holistically and suggest that Design is both a macro and a micro proposition and everything between.I tried to accomplish this visually by looking first on a universal scale, then a global scale, then a National, City, block, building, room, object, image, typography etc.Design encompasses both the very big picture – the great idea, the brilliant concept and grand visionbut it is also in…

Graphicality Catalogue

artist statementThe making of a single line which immediately implies the divide between ground and ‘not-ground’ and the ontological contrast of mark and non-mark, is where intent resides and the experience of mark-making begins. The line, the mark, the scrawl, the scratch, the grapheme, the trace, the scribble, the drawing, the graphic; at once delineated and designed, spontaneous and considered.Graphicality is evoked within this body of work as a quality of line, an explicitly diagrammatic, painted, written, formed, designed and drawn mark. These works refers to that graphical line and the shapes circumscribed and explored by it – particularly the rhizome. In…

Translating into Typefaces…

With enormous thanks to my colleague, the talented Wayne Thompson at Australian Type Foundry, I have finally managed to finish the custom typeface - Translation Hand, conceived as part of my PhD research around art and design. It's nothing too clever typographically speaking; just based my own handwriting, but intended as a means of conveying the significance of graphical aspects of textual presentation. You can find Wayne's typographic work here...www.atf.com.auFontLab screenshot of Translation Hand Regular under constructionSome of the sketched handwritten letters for the typeface

Out of Hand Exhbition Catalogue

13 – 24 August 2013 at The Depot Gallery, 2 Danks Street, Waterloo NSW. Out of Hand is an exhibition of painting and sculptural works by a group of artists who share a discursive interest in continuing the language and experience of contemporary Abstract art. The paradoxical nature of relationships that have arisen through the process of collaboration resist a homogenised reading in this instance and deliver a body of work that shares a visual vocabulary, particular to the aesthetics of Abstraction. As a process and vehicle of representation, Out of Hand explores a ‘glocal’ rethinking of modernism through a collective response to the role of the author and the spatial relationships that take place in the traditional sphere of reception, the gallery. These…

Materiality and print media: Deleuze and Guattari style

INSERT at Caffestry (PODspace pop-up laneway art events)Friday 3, 10, 17 May 2013 During May PODspace Gallery presented a series of art events in the laneway next to Caffestry in Newcastle East. This was an experiment not only in presenting events outside of the traditional gallery context, but also in bringing different artists together to explore the creative process. The first night saw Misha and Luke Greenhalgh improvise a cross-artform collaboration that involved Misha painting a mural on a wall while responding to Luke’s music. In week two, Neil Mansfield projected his film ‘Street Sweeper’ onto the back wall of the laneway, while Fox…

Unedition: hello blackbird

Watt Space GalleriesApril 2009Exploring the monoprint and monotype as unique print states using the blackbird as a visual motif. The blackbird is that of Wallace Stevens' poem and the prints are physical manifestations of inexact repetition - the unedition of the exhibition title."...A long series of monoprints splits the careful atoms and organisms of the past in wild black-and-white spontaneity. Forms take wing. Brush marks accelerate. But the artist's professionalism governs the immaculate artist books. It is a great mix."
